On September 9, 1948, five awesome Sorors met at the home of Soror Gertrude L. Jackson to make plans for organizing a graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in Pensacola, Florida. Those Sorors were Thelda A. Williams, Callie V. Harris, Maude R. Jackson, Bernice Simpson, and Gertrude L. Jackson. They were former Gamma Alpha Chapter undergraduate members at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida.
Permission was granted by Soror Matella Maru, Southeastern Regional Director of Savannah, Georgia, and on November 20, 1948, Gamma Tau Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was born.
Seventy-five years since the historic beginning of being chartered in Pensacola, Florida, the Sorors of Gamma Tau Zeta Graduate Chapter continue the mission on which Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated was established: to promote the cause of education by encouraging the highest standards of scholarship through scientific, literary, cultural and educational programs; promoting charitable projects on college campuses and within the community; fostering the spirit of sisterly love, and promoting the ideals of Finer Womanhood.
We are inherently committed to the principle that teaching is most effective when carried out in a context that encourages the creation of solutions. By holding on to our traditions and continuing to stand on our foundations, the members of Gamma Tau Zeta not only desire to constantly better ourselves but, more so, to improve the lives of others and continue to be examples of Finer Womanhood.
All that is remarkable about Gamma Tau Zeta’s legacy remains true. We provide excellence through diverse programming as our members make the most of their talents, acquiring, creating, and disseminating the knowledge necessary to engage, shape, and transform the community for the better.
